From the moment their eyes met, Grant Hemmingworth knew he wanted to be with Charlotte McDaniel...in more ways than one. After returning home from his last tour during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the ex-Marine couldn't resist the need to learn if the salacious rumors spreading around town about the beautiful young mother were true. It took only one night of making passionate love to Charlotte for Grant to realize two things Charlotte was not the whore people in town claimed her to be, and Grant wanted Charlotte to forever be his and his alone. But getting Charlotte to want to be with him proved to be more of a challenge than Grant originally surmised. The quiet, reclusive woman was just as stubborn as he was when it came to admitting how she really felt about him and Grant soon realized that his days of war were not over. He now had to fight in a new battle...the one to win Charlotte's heart. (Notice Novel contains explicit love scenes.)

"The story is a romance, concerning two main characters - Grant and Charlotte. It looks into the many issues surrounding relationships, to include all the insecurities, the highs, the lows and the complicated way the mind can work. It's about protecting oneself in the face of the society, of how a person can feel, especially if barraged by hate. Lies, therefore are told - from others, to each other and to themselves, all culminating in misunderstanding and the wrong path taken. On the whole, I would say read this story if you like romances and you like the feeling of wanting to knock people's heads together to making them see sense. Yet, it can be argued as all too true in the way people think, feel and behave." ~ UK Author Julie Elizabeth Powell

Loved the book. Definitely a page turner. Usually a slow reader unless a book captures my attention. This one did from the first to last page. Keep em coming.

Charlotte War J S Goldstine 9781470054304 Books Reviews

I could not put this book down. I absolutely loved it.
I'm not sure why it took me so long to get to this book (the to-be-read list on my kindle is INSANE) but I literally stayed up all night reading it! I was on edge for the last few chapters, wondering if the characters would get back together, if all the misunderstandings would be sorted out and well, they were, but not like I expected them to be because the angst was amazing.

In this book we follow Charlotte, whose character is reminiscent of Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter. The whole town gossips about her and treats her badly because she has a son and doesn't know the father (The way the author revealed why that was the case was utterly heartbreaking...). Then we have Grant, a Marine who has come home from the war and is utterly smitten by Charlotte at first glance, although he has heard some of the things said about her and tries to find out if they're true...

I don't want to spoil much, but the lengths he goes to to show Charlotte that he's not like other guys are extreme (somewhat questionable) but fun to read about nonetheless. The sex scenes were well written and I honestly felt the characters falling in love.

This book was already fairly long, but I was really sad when it was over. HIGHLY recommend!
First off, this whole story is just a series of lies. Everyone lies to each other. Charlotte lies to Grant. Grant lies to Charlotte. The only one who doesn't lie or lie by omission is the little boy, Samuel. I don't know about anyone else but I spent the whole book yelling at the characters in my head to tell the truth for once. Geez.
Grant, the male lead, completely destroyed any enjoyment I might have gotten from this story. He's self-centred, manipulative, and inconsiderate. Here's why

When the story opens, Grant has left the Marines and is now back home for good. He hears a rumour that Charlotte, a girl he's known since childhood, is promiscuous and he hopes it's true because he needs some... *ahem*... sexual relief. Then he sees her and instantly knows he wants her in his bed. He proceeds to cajole and pressure her into sleeping with him, and she agrees. Oh, sure, he never uses physical force and he gives her every chance to say no, but he's very persistent. In fact, he forces himself to be patient because she's so hesitant, he knows that one wrong move would frighten her away. He gently manoeuvres until he's got her where she wants her, and they have sex that same night. Did I mention that he recognises her hesitance and shyness, but continues to press for a sexual encounter? Is he thinking about what she wants or needs? No, it's all about him. Each time she's reluctant to do something he wants (something sexual), he persuades her into it.

That sets the tone for the rest of the story. He continues to pressure and manipulate her into doing things she doesn't want to do. It's all about him and what he wants. Further examples The morning after they have sex for the first time, Grant goes out for an appointment while she's still sleeping, and he takes her clothes with him so that she can't leave the house before he comes back. What the--?! What kind of behaviour is that? When he comes back, they start to have an argument about something. Angry, Charlotte asks for her clothes so that she can leave, but he refuses to give them to her because he wants her to stay. If anything like that happened to me, I'd be hearing blaring warning bells in my head! They'd be saying Stay away from this man, he's controlling and manipulative!

***SPOILERS BELOW***

Further on in the story, Charlotte gets drunk one night and when she wakes up with no recollection of what happened, Grant tells her they went and got married, and shows her pictures and a marriage certificate to prove it. That's right, he manipulated her into marriage when she was in no condition to give her consent! When she asks him why he did it, he says, "Because I wanted to." That's a direct quote from the book. It just gets worse from there. ****WARNING BIG SPOILER COMING**** Later it turns out he lied about them getting married. He did it because he wanted her to move in with him. He claimed he was afraid of losing her because he was already in love with her by then, and he thought if they lived together, she would eventually fall in love with him too. He loved her? I didn't see any evidence of this 'love'. Love does not manipulate and scheme and think only of one's own advantage!

***END SPOILERS***

Grant says he doesn't believe the rumours about Charlotte, but he doesn't do much to show her that. He tells her that he wants to marry her so that he can sleep with her whenever he wants to, "and to also make sure you are not sleeping with anyone else." That's a direct quote from the book. She comments that this makes it sound like she's a sex slave, not a wife, and he shrugs and replies, "If that's how you choose to see it." When Charlotte gets angry and tells him she doesn't want to be married to him, he seizes her and kisses her hard, ignoring her attempts to push her away, subduing her with his greater physical strength. This is hero material? This is a hot male lead? This is a man to melt your heart? I THINK NOT.
This book is very enticing and suspenseful. It is most definitely a page turner, making you never want to stop reading. You will find yourself saying just one more page repeatedly. Can't wait to read more books by this author. Keep them coming!
